Can couples go to a hamam together?
In most historic hamams the men’s and women’s sections are separate, so couples have their session apart. A private couple hamam works differently: two guests share one room that is reserved only for them.
Before you book anywhere, ask how the hamam handles couples. Practice varies from place to place and the answer decides what kind of evening you will have.
How a private couple room works
In a private room you do not meet other guests during the session. The room is set aside for you with a sauna and warm area, a marble surface for the scrub and foam, a place to rinse and a lounge to rest. If you add a massage, it takes place in the same suite, so you stay together from the first minute to the last.
The couple hamam session step by step
- You receive a pestemal and change in a private cabin.
- You relax in the sauna and on the heated marble while the steam softens your skin.
- A kese mitt removes dead skin.
- You are covered in a cloud of foam and rinsed with warm water.
- You cool down with Turkish tea and Turkish delight in the lounge.
What to wear and bring
The pestemal, towel and slippers are provided. Wearing swimwear or underwear underneath is common and completely fine. Bring your personal belongings and something comfortable to wear afterwards.
